The EU System for an Enabling Environment for Civil Society (EU SEE) is a European Union-funded global initiative designed to strengthen and protect the environment in which civil society organizations operate. The programme brings together civil society actors across 86 countries to monitor civic space, identify emerging threats and opportunities, and strengthen evidence-based advocacy for a more enabling environment for civil society. In Liberia, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) serves as a national network member working in collaboration with Forus to monitor and assess the enabling environment for civil society. WONGOSOL documents developments affecting fundamental freedoms, civic participation, access to resources, legal and regulatory frameworks, civil society, government relations, and access to safe digital spaces. The evidence generated contributes to country assessments, early-warning processes and advocacy aimed at protecting and expanding civic space.
Through research, monitoring, stakeholder engagement and policy dialogue, WONGOSOL works to ensure that the experiences and perspectives of women-led organizations, grassroots groups and other civil society actors are reflected in discussions and decisions affecting Liberia’s civic space.
At its core, the EU SEE Project seeks to contribute to a safe, inclusive and enabling environment where civil society organizations can freely organize, participate, advocate and contribute to democratic governance, accountability and sustainable development in Liberia.
