The Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP) is a Government of Liberia initiative implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) with financing from the World Bank. Under Component 2B, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), in partnership with Plan International Liberia, supports interventions aimed at improving girls’ access to and retention in education by addressing harmful social norms, gender inequalities and other barriers that contribute to girls dropping out of school.
WONGOSOL’s interventions focus on Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Rivercess and Rural Montserrado Counties, engaging girls and young women, parents, schools, traditional and community leaders, local authorities and other stakeholders. Activities include the establishment and strengthening of girls’ clubs, community and stakeholder dialogues, advocacy and awareness initiatives, and actions to promote safer and more supportive learning environments for girls.
