"Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance and Peacebuilding” Project

The Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance and Peacebuilding Project is implemented by the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) with funding from the Government of Ireland through UN Women Liberia. The project builds on ongoing efforts since 2021 to advance women’s meaningful participation and leadership in governance, public life, peacebuilding and community decision-making in Liberia.

The project works with women leaders, women-led civil society organizations, Peace Hut women, local and traditional authorities, male champions and other community stakeholders to strengthen women’s leadership and influence within local governance and peacebuilding structures.

Through capacity strengthening, advocacy, community dialogues, mentorship and engagement with decision-makers, WONGOSOL supports women to participate meaningfully in leadership, conflict prevention and resolution, mediation, civic engagement and local development processes. The project also engages men and traditional and community leaders as allies in addressing discriminatory social norms and creating an enabling environment for women’s leadership.

At its core, the project seeks to contribute to more inclusive and gender-responsive local governance and sustainable peace, where women have equal opportunities to lead, influence decisions and shape the development and peacebuilding processes that affect their lives and communities.
