The Liberia Fight FGM Project is a three-year initiative implemented by the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL) with funding from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund). The project seeks to contribute to the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other harmful practices while strengthening protection, support and opportunities for women and girls.
Implemented across Bomi, Bong, Gbarpolu, Grand Cape Mount, Margibi and Montserrado Counties, the project works with women and girls, FGM survivors, traditional leaders and practitioners, community structures, service providers and civil society organizations to promote the abandonment of FGM and strengthen community-based prevention and response mechanisms.
Through community awareness and advocacy, capacity strengthening, survivor-centered services, economic empowerment and livelihood support, the project addresses some of the social and economic factors that perpetuate FGM. It also strengthens the ability of communities and local actors to prevent violence, protect women and girls, and support survivors.
At its core, the Liberia Fight FGM Project promotes a future where women and girls can live free from FGM and other forms of violence, exercise their rights and bodily autonomy, and participate fully and safely in their communities.
